Rate My Coach ("RMC", "we", "us") helps recruits, their guardians, and former college athletes research and review college coaches. This policy explains what information we collect through the RMC mobile app, how we use it, and the choices you have.
When you create an account we collect your name, email address, password (stored by Firebase Authentication, never visible to us in plain text), and your account role (recruit, guardian, or former college athlete). Depending on your role you may also provide: sport, graduation year, hometown, position, height, weight, current school, GPA, target divisions, the name of the recruit you support (guardians), and the school you most recently played for (former athletes).
Former athletes who request verification additionally submit their full legal name, school, and optionally a social media profile link, graduation year, and height. This information is used solely to confirm athletic history and is not shown publicly.
If you write reviews, submit coach information, flag content, or like/dislike coaches, we store that content along with your account ID and timestamps.
If you turn on notifications for a coach, we record that you follow that coach so we can alert you when a new review is posted. If you allow push notifications, we also store a push token for each device you sign in on — an identifier issued by Expo's push service that lets us deliver a notification to that device — together with your per-category notification settings. Coaches you save as favorites are stored only on your device and are never sent to us.
We use your information to operate the app: authenticating you, displaying your profile to you, publishing your reviews (anonymously — see below), calculating coach ratings, verifying former athletes, and moderating reported content. We do not sell your personal information and we do not show third-party advertising.
Reviews are displayed without your name. Coaches and schools cannot see who wrote a review. Your account ID is stored with your review internally so we can enforce review limits, let you manage your reviews, and respond to moderation reports.
RMC is built on Google Firebase (Firestore and Firebase Authentication). Your data is processed and stored by Google Cloud in the United States under Firebase's privacy and security terms. Apart from the service providers described below, we do not share your personal information with third parties except as required by law.
A small number of third-party services help us operate the app. They process data on our behalf, under their own terms, and only for the purposes described here.
Google Firebase — authentication and database, as described above.
Expo push notification service — delivers notifications to your device. It receives your device's push token and the contents of the notification we send.
Sentry — crash and error reporting. When the app hits an error, Sentry receives technical diagnostic information about that error along with your account ID, so we can trace a crash report back to the affected account and fix it. Sentry does not receive your reviews, profile details, or email address.
If we add an analytics or measurement provider in a future release, we will name it here and update the "last updated" date before it starts collecting anything.
RMC is intended for users 13 and older. Recruits under 18 should review this policy with a parent or guardian; the guardian role exists so a parent can use RMC on a recruit's behalf. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
You can edit your profile information in the app at any time. You can manage notifications at any time from Profile → Notifications, or turn them off entirely in your device settings. You can delete your account and associated data (profile, reviews, likes/dislikes, coach follows, notification settings) from Profile → Delete Account. Deletion is permanent. You can also email us to request a copy of your data or ask us to delete it.
We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, reviews, reactions, coach follows, notification settings, and stored push tokens are removed. Moderation records (content reports) may be retained where needed for safety and legal compliance. Coach directory entries you submitted are public directory information, not personal data, and remain after account deletion.
Access to your data is restricted by Firebase security rules: only you (and administrators, for verification and moderation) can read your profile. Passwords are handled entirely by Firebase Authentication.
If we make material changes we will update this page and the "last updated" date, and where appropriate notify you in the app.
